Ultimate Janis-To-Go...well, almost - Janis listeners Karen and Gregor (below) have already pointed out the flaws and inconsistencies of this compilation but I can only concur with both of them on the indisputable fact that this boxed set with its accompanying booklet is a must have for all die-hard Janis fans, who will already have their personal libraries stocked with every CD or VHS/DVD that s available of, with and about Janis. I have been traveling around a lot and this boxed set - along with Kozmic Blues and Pearl to complement where I feel it lacks - has always traveled with me...from the US to Europe and back and finally to China. I must admit that at some point, the actual box was getting a bit difficult to carry around and so, with a heavy heart, I had to relocate the CDs to a more mobile CD book...but the set is still traveling with me and always will.
And this is where it all began - Subdued by the whimsies of my friend, and hoping to aid in removing a brick between us, I could see she wasn t open to my preaching, Fins to the Left of me, Fins to the right, or, the fact, It s 5 o clock, somewhere, on impulse, one night, I found myself consumed by the selections under Janis Joplin s name. She must be good to have all this following, right? Wrong! Yep, you heard me. Janis turned out to be worthy of even more praise! And, believe you me, I ll give it, though, we all should know that words are too restrictive to honestly give fair review to this angel, she who blessed both me and you.
The Rose - I became interested in Janis Joplin after seeing the movie The Rose. I was just captivated by the power in her voice. I had the soundtrack from a documentary of her life. It was great. There were interviews & other snippets from and about her on the album. But being young, I didn t appreciate what I had. My friends & family made fun of me for liking this white singer, so I gave in to peer pressure & gave the album away. I ve regretted that decision ever since, and have been searching everywhere for a CD version of the soundtrack. This is the closest I ve found so far. ****YOUNG PEOPLE! NEVER GIVE AWAY YOUR MUSIC OR BOOKS! YOU LL REGRET IT WHEN YOU RE OLDER!****
My favorite! - I bought this box set a few years ago and loved it. It got lost in the shuffle when I moved, and I was quick to buy it again. Well worth it.
What Happened? - After hearing and loving the great hit Ball and Chain with Janis along with Big Brother and the Holding Company and seeing that this song was included in this set I jumped at the chance to buy it used. What a disappointment, the version that I listened to for 30+ years was not even the one that was on this set. The one that was included was not near as haunting as the original, what a disappointment. There is some good material here but there is also some out takes that could of been replaced with more positive recordings. If I had it to do over I would of been more selective before making this $30.00 mistake!
